Violin Equipment Review - Bam Hightech Violin Case

Bam violin cases, made in France, have become very popular among professional violinists. The Bam Hightech Violin Case is a suspension case with a carbon fiber shell. It is light and sleek, especially in the carbon black model. But, in several ways, this case is long on style and short on function.

The basic Bam Hightech case comes without any pocket for music. But most violinists are accustomed to carrying at least some of their music zipped in their case. Bam addresses this by offering a detachable pocket, which comes in two sizes: letter size, and a larger compartment that can fit over-sized music folders commonly used for orchestra parts. However, the design of these music compartments is flawed. Place the case on a flat surface and open it, and watch the weight of the compartment tip the case backward.

In addition, much of the lightness of the case is lost when the pocket is added, and, especially if it is stuffed with music. And because the pocket is not centered on the case, its weight does not feel equally distributed across the shoulders when worn with the optional backpack straps. (These straps, by the way, are thin, have absolutely no padding, and are uncomfortable.)

In addition, the Bam case contains an inner compartment with a zipper for storing odds and ends (conveniently, there are velcro pieces that attach underneath the violin that can hold a standard rigid shoulder rest). However, this zipper can actually get caught in the locking mechanism of the case, interfering with its closure.

What's more, the latches on the case do not have overlapping mechanisms or a separate zipper to ensure closure in case of failure of the latch. Thus, if the instrument is not latched properly, the violin could come tumbling out.

Getting back to the Bam's strength (its style) the carbon black model, when brand new, starts out shiny and almost futuristic in appearance. But the shell's material --which is supposed to be so strong and durable-- scratches extremely easily.

In sum, the Bam Hightech case may have an enticing appearance and makes a good initial impression, but its flaws become readily apparent once it is actually put to use.
