Today kids of all ages and of all backgrounds are being pushed to the limit by parents, coaches, and society to perform like professional athletes in sports. The problem is that kids aren't professional athletes. They are kids. And the problem is becoming serious.
Kids are getting worn out, tired, and even worse, hurt because of how often they play sports. It is a normal issue when a kid gets hurt playing soccer and breaks their leg in a collision or fall in a game. It is not a normal issue when the kids gets a stress fracture in their shin simply from playing too many soccer games. A tournament here and there is fine. However, when a kid starts playing in tournaments during the weekend, games during the week, and is practicing all the time when there are no games, then playing soccer becomes more than an enjoyable sport. It becomes a problem.

There are several reasons why kids seem to be pushed to the limit in sports. Unfortunately, the first reason is because of their parents. Parents tend to go over the top when it comes to getting their kid involved in something. No longer do we see kids just playing sports for the fun of it. Now parents want their kids to play to win. And they want them to win at all costs. That means that their kids end up having to work harder at a younger age to be successful in their parents' eyes. This type of situation isn't healthy. What often happens is the kid will not only end up hating the sport that their playing but will also end up resenting their parents too.
Another reason why kids are being pushed to the limit is simply out of peer pressure. They see their friends playing a lot. Even if their own parents aren't be pushing them to over extend themselves, they want to keep up with their friends. Again, this isn't healthy.
A final reason why kids are being pushed to the limit is society's ever-increasing - and sometimes very unrealistic - standards. Kids can't go out anymore for a sport to just have fun. Kids are expected to be serious and lay it all out on the line for the win. But when does this allow our kids to just be kids?
When kids are young, they should play sports for one reason and one reason only: to have a good time and get some exercise. Sports should be pressure free and done so that the kid can enjoy themselves when playing.
The time to get serious about sports is in high school, college, and the professional level. Those are the years when appropriate life lessons can be gained from pushing athletes to the limits. Anything before that though should be low key, low stress, and fun. So parents, it's time to ask yourself this question, "Am I pushing my kid too hard?" If you answered yes, then it's time to take a step back and change some things. It will only help your kid in the long run.
